Wondering if I need cash for taxis in Laos or if I can just pay with card or app like in other countries?

Laos is definitely a cash-based country when it comes to getting around. Taxis aren’t common outside the capital, and most locals rely on tuk-tuks or private drivers. Every single ride I took was paid in kip, and no one even mentioned cards. Apps don’t cover Laos either, so you can’t sidestep the issue digitally. ATMs exist, but sometimes run out of money, so it’s smart to withdraw when you can. Cash is the only way here.

My experience in Laos was that cash is absolutely required for taxis and tuk-tuks. Cards aren’t an option, and there are no mainstream apps like Uber or Bolt. In Vientiane, I occasionally saw private drivers offering pre-booked rides where you might arrange payment differently, but on the street, it’s cash every time. Kip is what drivers expect, and if you only have US dollars, you might pay a higher fare. Just plan to carry local money for transport.

When traveling in Laos, I quickly realized that taxis and tuk-tuks only accept cash. It’s just how the system works, and no one has a card machine. Kip is the local currency, and you’ll need it for almost every ride. I didn’t see any app-based options either, so forget about paying by card. Even in Vientiane, drivers expect cash on the spot. My advice: keep a supply of small kip notes, because it makes paying drivers much easier.

In Laos, taxis are rare outside of major cities, and when you do find them, cash is the only way to pay. Most people actually use tuk-tuks or local transport, which are also strictly cash-based. Drivers expect kip, though US dollars are sometimes accepted in tourist-heavy spots. Cards don’t play a role in transport here at all. Apps like Grab work in some Southeast Asian countries, but not really in Laos, so cash is absolutely essential for rides.
