Travelling soon - any advice if hostels accept cards in Venezuela or I have to give them cash
Here’s the reality in Venezuela: cards won’t help you at hostels. Small places in Caracas, Mérida, or along the coast are cash-only. Bring USD in clean notes and expect to pay for your room upfront. Some bigger hotels can swipe Visa, but don’t count on it. ATMs don’t work with foreign cards either. Best plan is to bring dollars, split them into small bills, and change into bolívares when needed for food or buses. Without cash, you’ll be stuck-always prepare before entering.
I spent two weeks in Venezuela-stayed at Posada Villa Del Sol in Caracas and a little hostel near Mérida. Both were cash only. They wanted either USD or bolívares in hand. I tried using my Mastercard at an ATM and it was rejected. Luckily, I’d brought USD in small bills, which covered my stays. On Isla Margarita, I found a bigger hotel that did accept card, but it wasn’t a hostel. For budget travellers, cash is the only way you’ll be able to pay for hotel.
I stayed at a small hostel in Mérida and another guesthouse in Caracas, and both were cash-only. It actually wasn’t too stressful because USD is widely accepted, especially for rooms. I handed over dollars at check-in and nobody even asked about cards. For food and buses, I changed some money into bolívares locally. Once I accepted that Venezuela is cash-driven, it was easy. Hostels won’t take cards, but they’re used to dealing with travellers who arrive with cash. Just bring enough and it works fine.
In Venezuela right now, hostels and guesthouses rarely accept foreign cards. In Caracas, places like Posada Villa Del Sol only wanted bolívar cash or USD notes. International Visa/Mastercard payments are basically blocked. Some larger hotels in Caracas or Isla Margarita can process cards, but not budget hostels. ATMs often don’t work with foreign cards either. The only reliable way is to bring clean USD bills to pay for your stay, and change into bolívares when you need local currency for smaller things.
