I used my US card in Brazil & the ATM just asked me Accept or Decline Conversion - I feel like I should choose Accept coz it seems more appealing but it had these super confusing numbers on the screen saying 8% markup so not sure. What should I do?

Just say no to conversion. I compared both options using my Wise card, “Accept” gave me a worse rate and added a service fee. "Decline" gave me the actual Mastercard exchange rate with no junk.

I used my Chase card at Banco do Brasil.I hit “decline conversion” anyway. Result: mid-market rate, no hidden fees. Choose Decline every time.

ya i fell for that “accept conversion” once coz it looked safe. it’s not. ended up losing like $10 extra on a R$500 withdrawal on a santander ATM . after that i always decline and it works better. don’t let the fancy USD screen fool u lol

Never accept the conversion! It’s a trick called Dynamic Currency Conversion. The ATM shows you the amount in USD but with a terrible exchange rate, mine had like 8.5% markup. Always choose Decline so your own bank does the conversion, it’s way cheaper.
