Oh no, that is a nightmare! In Paramaribo, a swallowed card is a major issue because local banks, even big ones like Republic Bank, have security policies where they destroy foreign cards to prevent potential fraud. You will definitely not be able to get it back. The most important thing to do is to contact your home bank right away, like your Chase or Citibank. Use their international number to immediately block the card and report it as lost.

I've heard this is a common issue with older ATMs. The local banks in Suriname might be able to help you if it's their machine, but be prepared for a slow and uncertain process. Honestly, your best bet is to assume the card is gone for good. The fastest solution is always to block it remotely via your bank’s app and then order a new one.

It’s a tough lesson to learn, but you're probably not getting it back. When I was there last year, my friend's card was eaten by an ATM. The staff at the bank told him they couldn’t return it and just advised him to contact his home bank. The process is too complicated. The smartest move is to call your bank immediately to cancel the card and get a replacement sent to your next destination or back home. You'll probably need to get cash via a wire transfer or another card.

That's a major pain. It's a common issue with older ATMs. I was in Paramaribo for a few weeks and mainly used my Wise card. Getting a swallowed card back in Suriname is a long shot. The local banks like De Surinaamsche Bank often have a policy of destroying foreign cards that get swallowed to prevent fraud. They don't have the protocol to verify and return them to an international tourist. Your best and fastest option is to freeze the card through your banking app immediately, then call your bank's international support number. You'll need to arrange for a new card to be sent from your home bank. Don't waste too much time trying to retrieve it.
