Is it better to pay taxis in Burundi with cash, or do drivers accept cards or payment apps?

Taxis in Burundi want cash, plain and simple. No cards or mobile payments accepted by drivers. Make sure to have small bills since change can be hard to get.

I tried to use a payment app in Bujumbura, but the taxi driver wasn’t set up for it. So just plan to pay in local currency or dollars. ATMs are rare, so stock up when you get a chance.

From my trip, taxis in Burundi are cash-only. Even in the bigger cities, digital payments aren’t popular with drivers. I used cash most of the time and it worked fine.

In Bujumbura, taxis almost always expect cash. I didn’t see any card machines or payment app options, so it’s best to carry enough Burundian francs or USD. It’s definitely the easiest way to get around without hassle.
