Want to avoid last-minute ATM runs. Do most hostels in Vietnam take card payments at check-in or cash only?

For my recent stay, I booked at Chillout Hostel in Hanoi and Saigon Inn in Ho Chi Minh City. Both accepted card payments without any problems, though sometimes the connection was slow. On the other hand, smaller places like The Hideout Hostel in Hoi An were cash-only at check-in. So while card acceptance is improving, it’s still a good idea to have some local currency handy to avoid any last-minute ATM stress.

I stayed at The Common Room Project in Ho Chi Minh City, and they took Mastercard and Visa at check-in, which was convenient. But when I went to Little Charm Hanoi Hostel in the Old Quarter, they asked for cash payment only. Some hostels even charge a small fee if you pay by card. My best advice is to carry a small amount of cash just in case the card machine goes offline or if the hostel prefers cash deposits.

During my trip, I stayed at ibis Styles Hanoi (which is more hotel-like) and also at Nexus Lounge Hostel in Da Nang. Both accepted cards at check-in smoothly, and I didn’t need cash upfront. However, for budget hostels like Go West Hostel in Hoi An, cash was the norm. If you want to avoid last-minute ATM runs, try to pick hostels that clearly state card acceptance on their booking sites.

When I stayed at several hostels in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, I found that most places do accept card payments at check-in, especially Visa and Mastercard. However, some smaller or budget hostels, particularly in areas like the Old Quarter in Hanoi or District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, still prefer cash. It’s a good idea to carry some Vietnamese Dong just in case because the card machines can be unreliable or sometimes not working.
