My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Malaysia. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?
Yes, happened at an RHB ATM in Kota Kinabalu. I was distracted and didn’t remove the card fast enough. It auto-swallowed after a few seconds. Went to the RHB branch nearby and they confirmed the machine was programmed to take back cards quickly for security. I showed ID and they retrieved it the next day. I suggest calling the ATM bank right away and reporting it to your own bank too in case they suggest cancelling it.
Lost my Monzo card to a Public Bank ATM in Johor Bahru. It just shut down midway and took my card with it. I called the customer service line posted on the ATM but they said they could not return foreign-issued cards for security reasons. I froze the card instantly and got a replacement sent to a hostel in KL. Lesson learned. Always keep a backup and don’t use ATMs in the evening if the branch is closed.
My Equity Bank Visa card was swallowed by a Maybank machine in Penang. No error message, just nothing. I went to the Maybank branch next door and they told me the technician only comes once a day to retrieve stuck cards. They wouldn’t guarantee it could be returned since it was a foreign card. I ended up blocking it through the app and used my backup Mastercard. Always good to carry two cards when travelling.
Yes, this happened to me in Kuala Lumpur at a CIMB ATM. The screen froze during the transaction and my card never came out. I called the number on the ATM and they told me to visit the branch it was attached to the next morning. I had to show my passport and fill out a form. They returned the card after confirming everything. Took about 24 hours. Also called my bank back home to block the card just in case.
The guard at Bank Simpanan was really friendly and helpful they help me get my card back in 30 mins
