My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Cambodia. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?
I had this issue last month in Kampot. My Visa card was taken by a machine next to a supermarket. It wasn’t even linked to a major bank. Nobody picked up the helpline number on the sticker and I never saw the card again. Ended up blocking it through my banking app and used my backup card for the rest of the trip. I think the machines here are sensitive to delays or power fluctuations. Moral of the story: always carry a second card and try to stick to ATMs during banking hours in known bank branches. The standalone ones are risky.
Same thing happened to a friend at an ABA Bank ATM near the Independence Monument. His Revolut card just got swallowed after the transaction froze mid-withdrawal. He contacted ABA Bank via their Facebook page and they were surprisingly responsive. They confirmed they had the card and held it for three days. They asked for a passport and a signed request letter. Not convenient but better than nothing. If your hotel is nearby, ask them to call the bank directly locals often have better luck getting through. My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Cambodia. Has this happened to anyone else? Lost my card to a Canadia Bank ATM in Siem Reap last year. It was one of those standalone machines not connected to a branch outside a petrol station. I called the number on the ATM but they said they couldn’t help because it wasn’t business hours. The next day I went back and the machine was empty. The bank had already collected the card and destroyed it, which is apparently standard here for security reasons. Since then I always use ATMs that are physically located inside banks, and I never wait more than a few seconds to grab the card.
Yes, this happened to me in Phnom Penh at an ACLEDA Bank ATM right outside a mini mart. It was late evening and I guess the machine just timed out or had a software error because it never returned my card. I went into the bank the next morning with my passport and they had it. Apparently, if you don’t retrieve your card within a certain number of seconds it pulls it back in for security. The bank kept it safely and gave it back after verifying my ID. Definitely try visiting the branch during working hours if the ATM was attached to a bank.
Be cautious-Campu Bank ATM swallowed my Revolut card. Thankfully, I could retrieve it the next morning at the branch.
Maybank Cambodia offered great service. Efficient and polite.
Do not use ANZ ATM in Cambodia - it may eat your card. I had serious trouble getting mine back.
