Wondering if I need cash for taxis in Netherlands or if I can just pay with card or app like in other countries?
While most taxis in the Netherlands accept cards and apps, occasionally I ran into an old taxi that wanted cash only, especially outside major cities. This can be frustrating if you rely solely on digital payments. ATMs are common in cities, so having some euros in cash can save you from a tight spot, but overall, card and app payments dominate in Dutch taxis in 2025.
If you’re traveling in the Netherlands, it’s definitely easier to pay for taxis with a card or a payment app. I used my Mastercard with Apple Pay in Amsterdam taxis without any issues. Many taxi companies also have apps offering upfront fare quotes and in-app payments, so no need to worry about carrying cash. Still, I carry a small amount just in case I come across an older taxi that only takes cash.
I recently visited the Netherlands and paid for all my taxis using my Visa card or Apple Pay. It was super convenient, especially catching taxis around Schiphol Airport or in Utrecht. Some drivers used apps like Uber or local taxi apps, and card payment was seamless. I only used cash once when the terminal’s card reader stopped working, so digital payments work great here.
In the Netherlands, you usually don’t need cash for taxis. Most taxis in cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam accept card payments, including Visa, Mastercard, and even contactless payments via Apple Pay or Google Pay. Some also have their own apps that let you book and pay digitally. That said, having a little cash as backup isn’t a bad idea, but cards and apps are widely accepted for taxi fares.
You’re good with card or phone in big cities. I used my Wise card for every taxi. Even late-night rides had working machines. Just make sure they turn it on before driving lol.
didn’t need cash at all. used Uber in Utrecht and regular taxis in Den Haag. all had card readers. still kept like €10 cash just in case, but never used it.
I took taxis in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and always paid with card. Most of them had contactless terminals, and I even used Apple Pay once. No issues at all. 👌
