Which is better - choosing With or Without Conversion at ATM in Jersey UK?
I grabbed cash from Lloyds ATM by Sand Street car park. It asked the usual question, I hit Without, and my Revolut billed me fine in GBP. At my hostel in St. Helier, another traveler from Germany complained he pressed With at HSBC and lost €8 instantly. Everyone here agrees: Without Conversion is the right choice in Jersey.
Tourists from Europe often get caught by this. The machines show “guaranteed rate,” but that’s DCC markup. Always press Without Conversion and let Visa/Mastercard/Amex do the work. Even if your bank has a 2% fee, it’s still cheaper. I usually use HSBC or Lloyds ATMs in St. Helier and never bother with conversion.
I used a Barclays ATM near Liberation Square. Pressed With Conversion since it showed EUR, and my ING statement later revealed I’d overpaid. Next day I tried Lloyds ATM near Halkett Street Market, pressed Without, and the rate was spot-on. That confirmed it - always Without in Jersey.
In St. Helier, ATMs from HSBC, Barclays, and Lloyds will ask “With or Without Conversion” for foreign cards. That’s dynamic currency conversion. With = ATM fixes your withdrawal in EUR/USD at a poor rate. Without = you’re billed in Jersey pounds (JEP/GBP) and your card network handles the rate. I used HSBC on King Street - pressed Without, and my Chase card gave me the clean rate.
