My advice is to get a little cash at the airport just to get to your hotel, and then use a bank ATM for the rest. The ATMs from banks like BCA or BNI are reliable and give a good rate. The airport exchange rates are just terrible. It's not worth it. You'll save a lot of money and get a better rate by just using a debit card at a bank ATM in the city.

Don't even bother with the airport. The rates are horrible. Your best bet is to go to a licensed and reputable currency exchange office in the city. You'll get a much better rate for your US dollars or Euros. My advice is to use a place that has a good reputation and always check the rate before you hand over your money. This is especially important for large exchanges. The best rates are always in the city.

The airport exchange counters are a complete scam. You'll get ripped off with their bad rates. The best way to get cash is from an ATM. The ATMs from major Indonesian banks like BCA, Mandiri, and BNI are reliable and widely available. You'll get a rate much closer to the real exchange rate. The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the currency you'll need for everything, so you should have a good supply of it.

Avoid the airport currency exchange counters at all costs. They are known for giving terrible rates. The best thing to do is to go to a reputable currency exchange office in the city, especially in tourist areas like Bali or Jakarta. These money changers will give you a much better rate. I've used a place called PT. Dirgahayu Valuta Prima in Bali with a good experience. Just be careful and count your money right away in front of them, and avoid any shady-looking booths.
