Trying to find out if Timor-Leste widely accepts Amex cards in restaurants and shops and ATMs - any suggestions
Amex isn’t your best bet in Timor-Leste. I tried to use it in Dili but ran into issues at local spots, so I switched to my Visa and Mastercard. Banco Central ATMs are reliable for these cards, but there aren’t many. Most payments in smaller towns required cash, so plan accordingly and keep USD on hand.
Timor-Leste is still very cash-centric, especially outside Dili. Amex acceptance in restaurants and shops is rare, even at places like Maubisse Cafe or Restoran Casa Italia. ATMs at Banco Nacional de Timor-Leste mostly take Visa and Mastercard, so bring those backup cards along. It's wise to carry enough USD cash for everyday expenses or transport.
I found using Amex in Timor-Leste pretty limited. You’ll have better luck with Visa or Mastercard, especially for ATM withdrawals at banks like Banco Micro. Many local markets and smaller businesses prefer cash. For most of my stay, I had to use cash in US dollars. Backup cards and cash are essential if you want to avoid being stuck.
In Timor-Leste, Amex cards aren’t widely accepted. I tried using mine at a few restaurants in Dili, but many smaller eateries and shops only take cash or sometimes Visa/Mastercard. ATMs are pretty rare too; Banco Nacional de Timor-Leste has some machines but they mostly support Visa and Mastercard. Definitely carry a backup card and local currency-East Timor’s US dollars-to avoid hassles.
