Trying to find out if Suriname widely accepts Amex cards in restaurants and shops and ATMs - any suggestions

Suriname accepts Amex mainly in tourist-friendly zones and hotels, but outside that, it’s tough. Most shops and restaurants prefer cash or Visa/Mastercard. ATMs in Paramaribo, especially those of De Surinaamsche Bank, are best for Visa users. Have multiple payment options and keep Surinamese dollars on hand to avoid issues.

Amex works in Suriname but it’s not as common as Visa and Mastercard, especially outside Paramaribo. Shops, markets, and smaller eateries usually only take cash or Visa/Mastercard. I found reliable ATM access for Visa at banks like Finabank, so carrying backup cards and local currency is critical for convenience.

I used my Amex in Suriname mainly at upscale dining places and hotels, but many smaller vendors didn’t accept it. The local currency is Surinamese dollar, and most ATMs support Visa or Mastercard. The De Surinaamsche Bank ATMs in Paramaribo worked well for me with those cards. If you want smooth payments, carry a backup Visa and cash too.

Suriname’s Paramaribo has quite good acceptance for Amex in big hotels and restaurants, like at the Torarica Hotel or De Gadri. However, many local shops and food stalls prefer Visa or Mastercard or cash. ATMs from De Surinaamsche Bank generally support Visa and Mastercard better; Amex withdrawals are rare. I carried a backup card and some Surinamese dollars just in case.
