Across Guyana, it’s mostly cash-only for hostels and guesthouses. I used cash at The Maho Bay Hostel in Georgetown and couldn’t pay with my Visa. ATMs at Republic Bank and Scotiabank are common, so grab cash early. For a smooth trip, it’s best not to rely on cards when booking or paying for budget hotels.

I had trouble using cards for hostels in Guyana. Most smaller hostels like those in the Sophia or Albouystown area prefer cash payments. However, in more touristy lodges around Georgetown or the Kaieteur Falls area, cards are occasionally accepted. Always have backup cash ready for hostels to avoid issues.

If you’re planning a budget trip to Guyana, expect to pay hostels in cash. Places like Yes Guyana Hostel didn’t accept cards when I stayed there. For card use, you’ll want to stick to big hotels or lodges. Carry plenty of Guyanese dollars with you and withdraw at banks like Bank of Guyana or Republic Bank.

Most hostels and guesthouses in Guyana, especially around Georgetown, mainly prefer cash payments. I stayed at Lili’s Guest House in the city, and they only accepted cash. Credit or debit card use is rare outside bigger hotels. ATMs are available, like those at Republic Bank or Demerara Bank, but cash remains king for smaller stays and local transactions.
