Do places in Ecuador accept American Express?

Used Amex for my hotel in Guayaquil but not much else. It kept getting declined in shops. Had to rely on my Wise Visa most of the time.

My Amex Platinum worked at some big-name hotels and a few airport shops, but that’s it. None of the local markets or cafes took it. Also didn’t work at any of the ATMs I tried.

Tried to use Amex at a restaurant in Baños and they just shook their heads.

Forget Amex in small towns. Even in Quito, lots of places said no. My Visa worked everywhere, but Amex was hit or miss. I’d bring a backup card for sure.
