Not sure if I should carry coins for public transport in Suriname or if card payments are common. Advice?
Best to carry Surinamese dollars in small bills. Use De Surinaamsche Bank or Republic Bank ATMs in Paramaribo with a Visa card if you need cash. Don’t rely on Mastercard. Public transport is cheap but cash-only. Have change ready - drivers rarely break larger notes.
I had trouble with my Revolut Mastercard at multiple ATMs in Paramaribo, especially with Godo Bank machines. Couldn’t get cash and had to exchange USD at a poor rate in the city centre. Transport is only cash, so if you don’t have SRD, you’re stuck. No driver accepts foreign currency or cards.
I stayed at Guesthouse Amice in Paramaribo and found minibuses super easy once I had SRD cash. Fares were cheap - usually 10 SRD within the city. My Wise Visa worked at Republic Bank on Domineestraat, and I withdrew enough for the week. Shops around the hotel sometimes took cards, but transport was always cash. Carrying small notes made it smooth.
In Suriname, minibuses and shared taxis in Paramaribo are all cash-based. Drivers take Surinamese dollars (SRD), with fares usually 5-20 SRD depending on distance. No card payments are possible. ATMs from De Surinaamsche Bank and Republic Bank in Paramaribo work best with Visa cards, but daily withdrawal limits are low. Bring cash before leaving the city because machines are scarce in rural areas.
