Wondering how to pay for metro and bus rides in Bolivia - cash only, or do cards work too?

It’s a cash game. Even the newer systems don’t take foreign cards. Always keep coins and small notes for transport, especially outside big cities.

Mi Teleférico was super cheap and easy. I paid with coins at the kiosk but saw people using stored-value cards too. Not tourist cards though, just local ones. Definitely no Visa or Mastercard tapping happening here.

Used buses in Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. All cash. No card machines, no apps. You pay the driver when you get on. 🙂

In La Paz, for the Mi Teleférico cable cars you can use a reloadable card or just pay cash at the station. No international cards accepted directly though. For local buses and micros, it’s cash only. Have small change ready because drivers don’t carry much.
