I need to take out quite a bit of cash during my trip. Anyone know cheapest ATMs & daily withdrawal limits for foreign cards at Uruguay ATMs?

While living in Colonia this April, I used Banco Santander Uruguay at Club Uruguay Plaza - drew UYU 20,000 per transaction, twice daily, fee‑free on my Chase debit. I also tested BROU ATM near the port - better rate, same limit. Local ATM limits vary bank by bank, so best combo is BROU + Santander to maximize fee‑free withdrawals. Keep in mind, your home bank might charge international ATM fees too - check ahead.

I withdrew cash at Itaú Uruguay ATMs in Punta del Este’s municipal building, and they didn’t charge me foreign withdrawal fees. The daily limit was UYU 30,000. Their machines are serviced regularly and rarely go offline. Avoid ATMs at supermarket chains - they sometimes charge UYU 500 (~$12) per withdrawal. Stick to bank‑branded machines, especially inside working hours, and ask your home bank to lift any per‑day withdrawal cap.

I stay in Punta del Este during summer and rely on Scotiabank ATMs near Gorlero Avenue. They accepted my N26 card without applying any ATM surcharge, though they maxed withdrawals at UYU 25,000 per transaction. In Montevideo, Broadway Bank (BBVA) ATMs near Tres Cruces Bus Terminal also worked well - the limit was UYU 20K but I could do two transactions daily. Always reject “dynamic currency conversion” to avoid dodgy rates.

In Montevideo, Banco República (BROU) ATMs were the most budget‑friendly - no extra fees on my Revolut and a comfortable daily limit of around UYU 30,000 (~$750). Machines inside the branch at Plaza Independencia seemed safest. Avoid standalone ATMs at bus terminals; some added a hefty $8 foreign fee. I also used Santander Uruguay ATMs downtown with no extra charge, but the limit dropped to UYU 20,000.
