I need to take out quite a bit of cash during my trip. Anyone know cheapest ATMs & daily withdrawal limits for foreign cards at Ecuador ATMs?
Best experience in Quito was with Banco Pichincha and Banco Internacional -zero ATM fee and a cap of $300-$400 per withdrawal. Other banks like Banco Pacifico wanted like a 6.16 USD fee and Produbanco USD 4.60 so I obviously cancelled the transaction. Always hit “decline conversion” if asked, and try to plan ATM runs for city branches-machines there are better stocked and less likely to be out of cash.
Do yourself a favor and avoid Banco Pacifico for frequent withdrawals-they will charge you $6.16 for 1 transaction and sometimes only let you pull $100 per transaction! Cheapest was Banco Guayaquil with USD 3.51 fee for a USD 300 withdrawal. Fees do add up quickly on the Gringo Trail if you’re not careful.
For backpackers in Baños and Cuenca, Banco del Austro and Produbanco are reliable. Banco del Austro is reasonable at 4.12 USD per transaction atm fee but Banco Internacional - that used to be free, now charges USD 5.76 fee. Producbanco was ok, charged me USD 4.60 per transaction for a USD 500 withdrawal limit. Always max your withdrawal to avoid lots of fees, especially before long bus trips.
There are hardly any fee-free atms here so be ready to pay up. Cheapest was Banco Guayaquil which I tried recently for USD 3.61 fee and then Banco del Austro for USD 4.12 for a 500 USD withdrawal limit. but you'll find Banco Pichincha everywhere - slightly higher fee at USD 4.60 for a USD 300 withdrawal but convenience also matters, especially in small towns. Hack: always withdraw in daylight, as smaller town ATMs can be empty by night and also unsafe here.
One of the few ATMs on the island (Ecuador) - Banco Pacifico. It works but sometimes runs out of money.
Found a cheap ATM in central Quito operated by Banco Guayaquil. Worked fine, no fee surprises.
Australian UBank users: Banco Pichincha gives free withdrawals. Love it!
Banco Pichincha ATMs are quick, stocked with cash, and have no queues. Great location.
