Need cash when I land, best place in El Salvador? Airport or places in the city?

When I first landed in San Salvador, I exchanged $50 at the airport just in case, but later realized it was pointless because everyone wants U.S. dollars anyway. I ended up using a Banco Agrícola ATM in a shopping mall and got exactly what I needed with no drama. Since then, I always just carry USD cash with me when flying in, especially small bills. Airport counters only make sense if you’re coming from Europe with euros. Otherwise, it’s basically wasted money.

Since the official currency is USD, airport exchange counters are redundant unless you’re converting from euros or another foreign currency. In that case, do small amounts at the airport and then use city banks for better rates. For most travellers, ATMs like Banco Agrícola or Scotiabank inside San Salvador are simple, dispensing in dollars. My go-to is withdrawing $100 at the airport for taxis and incidentals, then handling everything else with a card. Just avoid relying on exchange counters, as their fees cut into your budget.

I wouldn’t waste money exchanging at the airport in San Salvador. You’re better off withdrawing directly in dollars from an ATM. Banco Agrícola, Banco Cuscatlán, and Davivienda ATMs are everywhere and trustworthy. Taxis and pupusa stands usually prefer smaller notes, so it’s worth carrying $20 in $1s and $5s before landing. The only time exchange counters make sense is if you arrive late and need a quick fix. Otherwise, ATMs in the city or even carrying USD from home is easiest.

No need to stress much in El Salvador - they use the U.S. dollar, so if you land with USD in hand you’re already good. Airport exchange counters at San Salvador do exist, but the rates aren’t great. If you need local cash, ATMs from Banco Agrícola or Davivienda are reliable, and you’ll find them right at the airport and in malls across the city. I always just bring small U.S. bills ($1s and $5s) for taxis and snacks when I arrive, then withdraw from a bank ATM in town for convenience.
