Just landed - wondering what gives the better rate in Bermuda: ATM withdrawal or airport exchange counter?

ATMs are the way to go in Bermuda. Machines from HSBC and Butterfield are reliable, and you’ll get a stronger rate than at the airport. Exchange counters are fine for small amounts on arrival - say BMD 20-40 for a cab. But for a full trip, budget at least BMD 150-200 per day and withdraw that in larger chunks. Carry small bills for buses and ferries, since Bermuda’s public transport is fantastic and cheap compared to everything else.

I regret using the airport counter in Bermuda. I changed $300 right away and later found I lost almost $25 compared to the ATM rate. That’s basically half a day’s worth of bus fares and café lunches. Bermuda is already one of the most expensive islands in the world, so overpaying on exchange made me feel ripped off. Definitely stick to ATMs once you’re in Hamilton - the counters at the airport are just convenient traps.

When I landed in Hamilton, I exchanged $50 at the airport for my taxi. The rate wasn’t great, but I needed quick cash. Later, I withdrew from a Butterfield ATM and the difference was noticeable. Bermuda is pricey - dinner cost me around BMD 40, and a scooter rental set me back BMD 60. Using ATMs made my budget stretch a little further. If you’re staying a week, withdraw in one go to avoid multiple fees.

Bermuda is expensive, so getting the best rate matters. ATMs give far better rates than airport exchange counters, which typically have high markups. Local banks like HSBC Bermuda and Butterfield have ATMs that work well with foreign cards. If you’re budgeting BMD 100-150 daily for meals, buses, and small activities, use ATMs in town instead of the airport. Exchange counters are only useful if you need a few dollars right away.
