Trying to find out if Saint Barthelemy widely accepts Amex cards in restaurants and shops and ATMs - any suggestions
Amex cards are welcomed in many restaurants and shops in Saint Barthelemy, especially in Gustavia and near beaches. But small cafes and local stalls often only take cash or Visa/Mastercard. For ATM cash, it’s best to expect Visa or Mastercard support from places like Banque des Antilles Françaises. Carry multiple cards and cash to stay safe.
Saint Barthelemy’s tourist areas and premium establishments generally accept Amex, which makes paying for meals or shopping pretty easy. That said, I had to use Visa for a few shops in less touristy areas or markets. ATMs like those at the Gustavia harbor are more geared towards Visa/Mastercard usage, so have backup cash too.
Using Amex in Saint Barthelemy was mostly hassle-free at hotels and high-end spots in Gustavia. Shops like Eden Rock and restaurant La Langouste take Amex easily, but be prepared with Visa or Mastercard as backup for smaller eateries or markets. I used CADECA ATMs for cash and noticed they cater mostly to Visa/Mastercard, so Amex withdrawals aren’t common.
I found that Saint Barthelemy is fairly Amex-friendly, especially in Gustavia’s upscale restaurants and luxury boutiques. Many places around Shell Beach and public squares accept Amex. However, smaller local vendors sometimes take cash only, so I always carried some euros and a backup Visa card. ATMs usually support Visa and Mastercard but not Amex cash withdrawals.
