Wondering how to pay for metro and bus rides in Montserrat - cash only, or do cards work too?

I recently visited Montserrat and used local minibuses mostly paying cash. The drivers don’t take cards, and digital payments weren’t an option. I withdrew cash from an ATM thanks to FirstCaribbean International Bank in Brades before heading out. It’s easy to get around but cash is king everywhere on the island.

Public transport payment in Montserrat feels behind the times. You must have cash for buses or shared taxis, no card or mobile payments available yet. It’s frustrating if you rely on cards like Mastercard or Visa. ATMs in Brades are helpful, but outside main towns, cash flow can be a problem, so plan accordingly.

If you’re taking buses or shuttles in Montserrat, prepare to pay cash since card options aren’t widely available for public transport fares. ATMs at Brades or Plymouth are reliable spots to get Eastern Caribbean dollars. The bus fare is usually low, just a few dollars per trip. For longer stays, consider budgeting ahead so you’re not stuck without cash.

Montserrat’s public transport is limited but mostly cash-based for now. Local minibuses and buses expect payment on boarding in Eastern Caribbean dollars or US dollars, and card readers on buses are not common. Tourist hubs like Brades have ATMs from banks like FirstCaribbean International Bank where you can withdraw cash, so always have some cash before traveling.
