Can I use a card to pay for taxis in Dominica, or should I carry local cash?
While driving around the Layou area, I noticed taxis definitely prefer cash. A few said they might accept cards, but the connectivity was poor and fees high. I wouldn’t risk it and suggest carrying cash if you’re exploring beyond the capital. Friendly drivers but expect cash only.
Honestly, Dominica is a cash paradise for taxis. I stayed at Fort Young Hotel, and taxis didn’t offer card machines. Cash is king, and paying with small bills is common. Since EC dollar is the official currency, make sure to have some on hand before jumping in a taxi, especially for longer rides to places like Trafalgar Falls.
Tried to pay a taxi with my Mastercard once near Prince Rupert Bay, but the driver refused. Most taxis here are local and cash-only. I found it easier to withdraw cash from Scotiabank ATMs in advance. Some taxi drivers also accepted mobile money apps, but cards were a no-go.
I used cash in East Caribbean dollars for taxis all over Dominica, especially around Roseau and Portsmouth. Card acceptance is almost non-existent; even taxis at Melville Hall Airport preferred cash tips. I kept about EC$50 in small notes, which made negotiating fares easier, especially around popular beaches or boat docks.
