The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Saint Barthelemy, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back

That's a major hassle. I've had friends deal with similar issues in places like this. With the limited number of ATMs on Saint Barthélemy, it’s a big problem. The local banks will likely not be able to return a foreign card. It's much safer and more efficient to call your bank immediately. Report the card as lost or stolen, and they will cancel it. You'll need to rely on cash for the remainder of your trip, so consider an emergency money transfer.

That’s so inconvenient, but this happens sometimes with older machines. I was on the island a couple of months ago and used my American Express card most of the time. In this case, your best bet is to call the international phone number for your bank-it should be on the back of the card-and have them cancel it. You won't get it back from the local bank branch; they will just tell you to contact your home bank.

Hey, I had this happen in Gustavia last year. It’s super frustrating, but you're not getting that card back. The local banks on the island have a policy of destroying any foreign cards that get swallowed for security reasons. They don't have the protocol to verify your identity as a foreigner and return it. Your best bet is to immediately use your banking app to freeze the card, then call your bank's international support number to cancel it and arrange for a replacement.

That's a pain, but luckily on Saint Barthélemy, things are a bit more straightforward than in other places. The main banks here, like BNP Paribas, are part of a larger network, and they might be able to help. Go to the branch where the ATM is located with your passport and explain what happened. However, be prepared for a long and uncertain process. The safest and quickest solution is always to contact your bank at home, like your Citibank, and have them cancel the card and issue a new one.
