No issues elsewhere, but in Saint Barthelemy, both ATMs and stores keep rejecting my card. Anyone know if this is common? Any banks that actually work?
If your card isn’t working, try BNP Paribas in Gustavia with a Visa card - it’s the safest bet. Avoid smaller ATMs scattered around the island. Always bring some euros, as exchange rates on the island are not tourist-friendly. Many restaurants and hotels do accept Visa, but don’t assume cards will work everywhere.
I had my Revolut Mastercard fail repeatedly at ATMs in Saint-Jean and Lorient. Even some higher-end boutiques in Gustavia wouldn’t accept it. Had to rely on euros I carried over from Guadeloupe. Honestly, the island feels like it only “half-trusts” foreign cards. Bring euros with you - don’t count on ATMs to always work.
My Wise Visa worked fine at the BNP Paribas ATM in Gustavia. I also used my Monzo card at a few restaurants near Shell Beach with no problem. Host at Villa Lodge told me that travellers often have trouble with Mastercard, especially at Banque des Antilles ATMs. Euro is the only currency accepted, so if your card doesn’t work, bring some cash from Guadeloupe or St. Martin.
Saint Barthelemy uses the euro, and ATMs are operated mainly by Banque des Antilles Françaises, Banque Française Commerciale, and BNP Paribas. Visa generally works better than Mastercard. If your card keeps getting declined, try the BNP Paribas ATM in Gustavia near the ferry terminal - it’s the most reliable for travellers. Smaller shops in Lorient and Flamands still prefer cash.
