No issues elsewhere, but in Barbados, both ATMs and stores keep rejecting my card. Anyone know if this is common? Any banks that actually work?

Just back from Barbados-yes, rejection is definitely common! Mastercard worked at FirstCaribbean International Bank ATMs, but Discover failed everywhere. Even tourist shops sometimes asked for cash despite the card logos on their windows. To avoid stress, I’d recommend carrying US dollars as they’re widely accepted and exchange easily into BBD. For day-to-day things like public minibuses, local fruit stalls, or even small boat tours, you’ll absolutely need cash. A comfortable daily budget would be around 120 BBD if you’re mixing dining, attractions, and beach activities.

From my experience, card rejection in Barbados is hit or miss. It’s not uncommon for both shops and ATMs to decline international cards. I was lucky at RBC ATMs near Grantley Adams Airport, but later in Speightstown I had zero success. My tip: withdraw a larger amount in one go when it works, because multiple withdrawals mean multiple fees. For food, plan about 80-100 BBD per day if you’re eating out at mid-range restaurants like Oistins fish fry. Always confirm with your accommodation whether they accept card before checking in.

Honestly, Barbados is more cash-reliant than I expected. Even though it’s tourist-friendly, I found myself running around Holetown looking for a Scotiabank ATM that would actually work with my Visa debit. When it failed, I had to ask a local who directed me to Broad Street in Bridgetown where bigger bank branches are more reliable. Stores like Cave Shepherd department store take cards, but the beach bars on Carlisle Bay didn’t. Budget around 100 BBD per day for meals, entrance fees, and buses if you want to avoid being stuck.

I had a tough time in Barbados with card acceptance. ATMs like CIBC and Republic Bank worked sometimes, but smaller machines around Bridgetown kept spitting my card back. Shops too, especially beachside stalls and small cafés, often only take cash. Bring enough Barbados dollars or US dollars to exchange. You’ll need at least 50-70 BBD daily for taxis, rum shacks, and small market buys. Credit cards are usually fine at hotels and car rentals, but don’t depend on them everywhere. Always have backup cash because rejection at both ATMs and stores is quite common.
