My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Bonaire. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?

It’s annoying, but the card is gone. The ATM is designed to keep it and then destroy it to prevent fraud. I'd recommend using a Wise or Revolut card in the future, as they can issue a virtual card instantly and you can use it with mobile payments. For your current situation, call your bank and have them send a new card. In the meantime, you can use a second debit or credit card you hopefully brought, or get cash from an international wire service like Western Union or MoneyGram.

Unfortunately, this is a real pain. It's usually a bank's security protocol or a small machine error. Your best bet is to call your bank immediately to cancel it. They can usually ship a new card to you if you are staying for a while, or you can use a different card if you have one. You are unlikely to get the card back as the bank will destroy it for security reasons. This happened to me at a CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank ATM near my hotel, and my bank couldn't retrieve it.

Yes, it’s a common occurrence. The best and most important thing to do is to contact your home bank right away and report it. The card is likely gone forever; for security, the ATM provider will destroy it. On a small island like Bonaire, it's easier to handle than in a big city. Go to the nearest MCB or other bank branch, explain what happened, and they might be able to help you get a new card shipped to the island or give you a cash advance with your passport.

This has happened to me before. The first thing you need to do is call your bank immediately and freeze or cancel the card. Don't waste time trying to get it back, because most banks will just destroy the card for security reasons. The ATMs here, run by banks like Maduro & Curiel's Bank (MCB), are generally reliable, but sometimes they can malfunction or capture a card if you enter the wrong PIN too many times. Once you have a replacement card on the way, you can get cash by going inside a bank branch with your passport and a form of ID.
