Dont want to carry too much or too little. Whats the average cash people carry when travelling around Egypt?
Egypt can be incredibly cheap if you want it to be. I averaged $35-$45 a day in Luxor and Aswan. Hostels were $10, food like koshary and falafel cost under $2, and transport by local minibuses was less than a dollar. Attractions were the only bigger costs, but still affordable-Temple of Karnak was $5. A hot air balloon in Luxor was $100, which was my splurge. Otherwise, Egypt is one of the cheapest countries I’ve travelled in.
Cairo was a bit more expensive for me-around $50-$60 per day. I stayed in a $15 guesthouse near downtown, ate at local restaurants for $5-$8, and taxis added $5-$10 per trip. Museums were affordable-the Egyptian Museum was $5. Luxor and Aswan were cheaper, but tours bumped the costs. If you stick to street food and budget hotels, $40 a day is realistic, but if you want guided trips and nicer stays, budget closer to $60.
I managed Egypt for $35 daily outside of tours. Cheap guesthouses in Luxor were $8-$12, street food like falafel sandwiches cost less than $1, and buses were very cheap. Tours were the biggest expense-my Valley of the Kings guided tour was $30. If you want to do a Nile cruise, budget separately because that’s hundreds extra. But for regular travel, $40-$50 daily keeps you comfortable, with money left for souvenirs like papyrus or spices from Khan el-Khalili.
Egypt was surprisingly affordable. I averaged about $40-$50 a day. Hostels in Cairo were $10, meals at koshary shops were $2-$4, and metro rides were under 50 cents. Entry to big sites like the Pyramids cost $10-$12, and day trips to places like Saqqara or Memphis added $20-$30. If you want to splurge on Nile cruises or hot air balloon rides in Luxor, that will add a few hundred, but the daily spend otherwise can stay very low.
