Trying to find out if Iran widely accepts Amex cards in restaurants and shops and ATMs - any suggestions

If you’re planning a trip to Iran, do not rely on AmEx or any international card-none will work. Instead, arrange a prepaid Iran Tourist Debit Card before or upon arrival. Load it with USD or EUR, and use it at POS terminals in cafés, shops, hotels, and ATMs (e.g., Pasargad Bank or Bank Sepah). This method gives real convenience and security compared to carrying bulky cash. It’s the only truly functional option for payments across Iran.

When I landed in Tehran, I assumed I’d just swipe my AmEx or Visa-big mistake. None of the ATMs, not even at Mellat Bank or Bank Melli, accepted it. I heard about tourist debit cards, got one via an agent, and it was a life-saver. I used it at cafés in Tajrish, street markets, and even at Imam Khomeini Airport ATMs. No need to lug around piles of cash. For Iran, ignore AmEx and go with a tourist debit card-it’s your best bet.

Despite the card restrictions, I found a surprisingly smooth workaround in Iran. Before arriving, I ordered an Iran Tourist Debit Card (via VisitOurIran or orienttrips) preloaded with USD, and it worked everywhere-from Pasargad Bank ATMs to POS terminals at hotels or restaurants. It meant I barely touched cash and didn’t worry about holding bundles of rial. While you can’t use AmEx, this tourist card felt like a ticket to a simpler payment experience.

In Iran, AmEx doesn’t work-period. Due to international sanctions, your Visa, Mastercard, or AmEx cards won’t be accepted at ATMs or stores. You’re better off planning to use cash. A more reliable option is to get a local Iran Tourist Debit Card (like Mah Card or DaricPay) that you can preload with USD or EUR and use for payments or ATM withdrawals across the country.
