Wondering if I need cash for taxis in Cyprus or if I can just pay with card or app like in other countries?

From my trip to Cyprus, I’d say always prepare to pay cash in taxis. In the cities, you might find a few card-friendly drivers, but it’s inconsistent and unreliable. Using apps like Bolt was the best way to ensure I could pay digitally. Outside of urban centers, forget about cards-drivers won’t accept them. So yes, have cash in euros ready at all times. Apps help if you want to stick to card payments, but it’s not universal yet.

My Cyprus taxi experience was mostly cash-based. In bigger cities, a few companies advertise card acceptance, but drivers often push for cash anyway. It’s not that they never take cards, just that it’s hit-or-miss. Apps like Bolt were a lifesaver since I could link my card and avoid awkward payment conversations. If you’re planning to move around more rural areas, don’t expect cards at all-cash is your best friend. Keep small euro notes handy for smooth rides.

Cyprus taxis aren’t reliably set up for card use. I tried twice in Larnaca, and both times the drivers insisted on cash even though their cars had card logos. The only time I paid with card was via Bolt, which worked well. Everywhere else, cash was expected. My suggestion is to carry enough euros and not rely on card readers. If you’re staying in cities, use Bolt when you can, but for rural areas and airport trips, cash is simplest.

In Cyprus, taxis are a bit behind when it comes to digital payments. I tried paying with card in Nicosia and Larnaca, and the drivers all asked for cash instead. Some companies technically have card readers, but the drivers often claim the machine isn’t working. Apps like Bolt work in parts of Cyprus, and those allow card payments, which was much more convenient. But if you’re hailing a cab from the street, assume cash in euros is the way to go.
