Trying to figure out if buses and metros in Yemen take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
Yemen’s public transport is entirely cash-based. No metros, and buses won’t even consider card payments. I always carried plenty of small Yemeni rials to pay for bus and taxi fares. ATMs and electronic payment infrastructure are limited, so plan to use cash predominantly.
I tried using cards for transport in Yemen but it’s not an option. Buses run on cash only, and taxis in cities like Taiz also expect you to pay in cash. No metro system here, so cash is essential for daily commutes. Make sure you get your rials from a reputable exchange or bank before hopping on.
If you’re planning to use public transport in Yemen, definitely bring cash. No card readers on buses or shared taxis. I paid for rides in cash everywhere-mostly Yemeni rials-and it was easy as long as I had small denominations. The transport system is pretty informal, with no metro lines operating.
From what I experienced traveling through Sana’a and Aden, public buses and minibuses in Yemen only take cash. There’s no metro system, so it’s all about those local shared taxis and buses. Drivers expect exact cash payment, usually in Yemeni rials, and don’t accept cards at all. Carry small bills for quick fares.
