Traveling Yemen with foreign cards means fees and unreliable ATM access. Tadhamon Bank ATMs are usually the safest bet in cities like Sana’a, but you’re still likely hit with withdrawal charges. I recommend using BigPay or other travel cards with low international fees rather than local bank cards to save. Getting enough cash initially is vital, as smaller towns rarely have working ATMs or card acceptance. Stay aware of ATM skimmers and always protect your PIN!

Yemen’s banking system is quite limited. I mainly used Tadhamon Bank ATMs in Sana’a with my Mastercard, but fees added up quickly, and daily limits were tight. I’d advise budget travelers to bring sufficient cash, especially since many small businesses don’t take cards. If your home bank charges high foreign transaction fees, consider a prepaid travel card that minimizes these costs. ATMs in Aden and Taiz are scarce, so plan withdrawals well ahead.

I tried using my Visa card at several ATMs in Yemen and found that while they usually accept foreign cards, fees can be significant, and machines sometimes swallow cards. The Tadhamon Bank’s ATMs had the most reliable service in Sana’a. On a budget, bring cash and use ATMs sparingly. If you want to avoid fees, try a card like BigPay, otherwise, cash exchange on the street might be your best bet.

Yemen is tricky when it comes to free ATMs for foreigners. In Sana'a, you’ll find a few ATMs at the airport, Mövenpick Hotel, and near big banks, but many don’t always work. Tadhamon Bank is one of the largest and most trusted banks here; they have decent ATM coverage but expect fees for foreign cards. My advice? Carry enough cash in Yemeni Rials as many places don’t accept cards, especially outside major cities. Cards like BigPay help with low fees, but cash is king.
