Trying to avoid paying crazy ATM fees while traveling in Oman. Anyone found ATMs that are free for foreign cards? Would love specific banks or locations if possible.
When I visited Oman, I mainly used HSBC Oman and Bank Muscat and Dhofar ATMs. With my Wise Visa, the withdrawal limit was 300 to 500 OMR, and I was never charged by the local bank. I usually withdrew once a week since most restaurants and hotels took cards. It was only the souqs and smaller shops in Nizwa or Sur where cash was essential. I kept about 30 OMR on hand for taxis and roadside snacks. Overall, Oman ATMs were easy to use and reliable with foreign cards.
Not every Omani ATM is equal. My Chase debit card was rejected twice at Sohar International Bank, and when it worked, the withdrawal limit was 150 OMR with no fees extra charged. But some machines tried to offer USD conversion with very poor exchange rates. I found Bank Muscat and Oman Arab Bank the most reliable and with higher limits. My tip would be to withdraw in Muscat before going into smaller towns, as ATMs in remote areas sometimes run out of cash. Always carry a backup card just in case.
I had a very smooth time withdrawing cash in Oman. Bank Muscat ATMs at Muscat Grand Mall and Bank Nizwa ATMs worked perfectly with my Monzo Mastercard, no local fees added, and I was able to withdraw 500 OMR in one go. The National Bank of Oman ATM and Ahli Bank also accepted my Revolut card without issues. I hardly needed cash since almost every café, taxi app, and shop accepted cards, but it was useful to have 20-30 OMR in notes for smaller purchases and tipping. Oman is one of the easiest Gulf countries for money access.
Oman has a strong banking network, and the easiest ATMs for foreign cards are Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman, and Bank Dhofar Oman. I used my Wise Visa at Bank Muscat, with a withdrawal limit of 1,000 OMR (~$520 USD). There was no local fee, just my home bank charge. Dhofar Oman ATMs also worked fine with my Revolut card, offering similar limits. Most ATMs are in malls, airports, and petrol stations, so you won’t struggle to find one. Always withdraw in OMR, not USD, to avoid conversion traps.
