Hungary turned out cheaper than I thought. In Budapest, I had lunches for €6-7 and dinners around €14 with drinks. Public transport is efficient and cheap, so a €30 monthly pass saved me a lot. Tipping was straightforward - always 10%. Some days I only spent €25-30 by eating local and avoiding extras, while spa days or ruin pubs pushed it to €50+. A safe number is €40 daily, especially if you like eating out regularly. Smaller cities like Pécs or Szeged cut that cost easily.

Hungary isn’t expensive by European standards. Meals: €6-8 for casual, €12-15 for restaurants. Transport: metro/tram/bus tickets €1.50 each, or €15 weekly pass. Tips: 10% standard. Daily safe budget: €40-50 in Budapest, €30-35 outside. Extra activities - spa visits €15-20, ruin pub nights €10-20, day trips €10 transport plus food. For a month, €1,200 is realistic for comfort without overspending. Hungary balances affordability with quality food and culture, especially if you enjoy markets and cooking some meals yourself.

For Hungary, I budget around €40-50 per day when staying a month. Cafes in Budapest charge €6-8 for a meal, and sit-down dinners are closer to €12-15. Transport is inexpensive: a monthly Budapest pass is around €30, so that’s a bargain if you’re there long-term. Tipping is expected, usually 10%. If you factor in occasional attractions like thermal baths or ruin bars, the safe budget climbs closer to €50. Outside Budapest, everything is cheaper, so you might get by on €30 per day in smaller towns.

Budapest was one of my cheapest city stays in Europe. If you eat at markets or grab goulash and lángos from stalls, you’re looking at €4-6 per meal. Local trams and metro cost about €1.50 per ride, or €15 for a week pass. Tips are about 10%, often rounded up. You can easily survive on €25 daily if you’re strict, especially outside the capital. Hostels sometimes give free breakfast, which helps. Save a little extra for spa entry, which is €15-20, worth it once or twice.
