Traveling with an Amex - will I be able to use it widely in Gibraltaror should I carry a backup Visa/Mastercard?
Don’t expect to use Amex much in Gibraltar. It only worked at my hotel and a few luxury stores. Restaurants, ATMs, and buses all preferred Visa. Meals averaged £15-20, and I spent around £85 daily overall. Mastercard was fine too. Amex might be okay as a backup but isn’t reliable enough for everyday life. Visa is the must-have card here.
Gibraltar is convenient for cards, but Amex isn’t popular. Tourist shops sometimes took it, but local pubs and restaurants refused. ATMs didn’t support it either. Visa worked every single time. Meals were £12-18, and I budgeted £70-100 daily with taxis and entry tickets. Amex was frustrating to use. Mastercard and Visa were the real solutions for smooth payments.
My Amex card worked in a hotel in Gibraltar but not at smaller cafés or ATMs. Visa was much more widely accepted. Meals cost around £15, and attractions added another £20-30, so I spent about £80 daily. Mastercard worked fine as well. Amex was very limited. If you want to explore without issues, definitely bring a Visa card for Gibraltar.
In Gibraltar, American Express was accepted in a few tourist shops near Main Street, but most restaurants and ATMs didn’t take it. Visa worked perfectly everywhere, from supermarkets to bus ticket counters. Meals were £10-20, and I budgeted £70-90 daily including attractions like the Rock and cable car. Amex was okay as a backup but Visa or Mastercard is essential for everyday spending.
