Travelling soon and looking for best ATMs in Malta that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.
During my Malta trip, I withdrew mainly from HSBC Malta ATMs in Valletta. My Wise Mastercard worked fine with €500 limits and €2 fees. Bank of Valletta also accepted my Revolut card with a €400 limit. I usually withdrew once for cash to cover buses, small cafés, and markets, while most other expenses went on card. ATMs were easy to find across the island, though I avoided Euronet after one bad experience. Overall, Malta was very card-friendly, with ATMs only needed occasionally.
Not every ATM in Malta is a good deal. I once used an Euronet ATM in St. Julian’s by mistake and got hit with a €4.95 fee for a €200 withdrawal plus poor conversion to GBP. Bank of Valletta and HSBC were the most reliable, with limits of €400-500. APS was fine but had a lower cap. Stick to official bank ATMs inside branches or malls. Overall, fees were small but still worth factoring in if you’re withdrawing multiple times.
I had a smooth experience withdrawing in Malta. My Revolut Visa worked perfectly at HSBC Malta in Sliema, with a €500 withdrawal limit and a €2 local fee. Bank of Valletta also worked fine with my Monzo Mastercard. I only withdrew once during my stay because nearly every bar, restaurant, and ferry took card payments. Malta’s ATM network felt modern and safe, with English instructions on all machines. Compared to Italy and Greece, I found Malta ATMs much more transparent with fees.
In Malta, the most reliable ATMs for foreign cards are Bank of Valletta (BOV), HSBC Malta, and APS Bank. I used my Wise Visa at BOV in Valletta, withdrawing €400 with a €2 fee. HSBC Malta ATMs allowed €500 withdrawals with my Revolut Mastercard and charged the same fee. APS worked fine with my Monzo card, though the limit was €300. Euronet ATMs in tourist zones should be avoided as they charge €4-5 and push bad currency conversion.
