Why do ATMs and shops in the UK just keep declining my wise card. It worked fine in other countries
Absolute nightmare with my Wise card in the UK last month! Worked perfectly in Spain and Germany, but London was a disaster - declined at 2/3 contactless terminals. Called Wise, and they said it’s a known issue with UK merchants flagging "non-UK issued" cards as "high risk." Their solution? Use Apple/Google Pay linked to Wise it bypasses the problem somehow. Also, avoid smaller corner shops; they’re the worst offenders. Ended up using my Monzo as a backup. Still love Wise for transfers, but their card reliability here is iffy.
Had this at Sainsbury’s self-checkout. Wise support told me some UK merchants block "non-resident" cards for "fraud prevention." Joke’s on them - I just used my Starling account instead. Wise is still king for FX rates though.
Yep, UK is weirdly strict. Two things:
Always select "credit" even if it’s a debit card. Some UK systems treat Wise as prepaid (which triggers declines).
Turn on "international transactions" in your Wise app. Mine was off by default after an update.
Side note: Revolut worked flawlessly for me in the same places. Might carry both next time.
Ugh, same issue here! My Wise card got declined at 3 different UK ATMs last week even with plenty of balance. Called support and they said it’s a "local bank security quirk." Apparently, some UK terminals flag non-UK-issued cards (even though Wise’s IBAN is Belgian). Workaround: Use ATMs inside major banks like Barclays or Lloyds they’ve worked for me. Shops are hit-or-miss; Tesco accepts it, but Boots auto-declines. So annoying! Why do ATMs and shops in the UK just keep declining my wise card. It worked fine in other countries
