For meals, transport, tips - whats the safe amount to carry in Wallis & Futuna ? Trying to plan a daily budget for a month long trip
My trip there was awesome but you gotta be ready with cash. ATMs are only in Mata Utu town and can be iffy. Taxi rides are around 1,200-1,500 XPF per trip, and meals usually cost between 1,500-2,000 XPF. Renting a scooter is the easiest way to explore and costs about 5,000 XPF daily. Tipping isn’t common but leaving a little change is nice. Having about 15,000 XPF a day gave me peace of mind for food, transport, and little extras.
If you’re planning a month-long trip, aim for around 14,000 XPF a day. Eat local at markets or small eateries to keep food costs down-lots of delicious fish and taro! Public transport is almost non-existent, so scooters or taxis are your best bet. A taxi ride usually runs 1,000-2,000 XPF, so plan accordingly. Banks like Bank of Wallis have ATMs but don’t always work, so keep cash around.
Honestly, stuff is a little expensive here. I spent loads on transport since buses don’t run much, so had to use taxis or rent scooters. Meals at small places are okay but can hit your wallet around 2,000 XPF each. For a daily budget, I’d say keep about 13,000-16,000 XPF handy, especially if you want to visit different villages or beaches. Bring a Visa card too if you can, but don’t count on card payments everywhere.
Wallis & Futuna is pretty remote, so things can get pricey compared to other Pacific islands. For meals, expect to pay around 1500-2500 XPF ($13-$22) at local cafes, and taxis cost about 800-1500 XPF per ride. If you plan to get around a lot, renting a scooter or a car could be around 5000 XPF daily. I’d carry roughly 12,000-15,000 XPF a day to be safe, which covers decent food, transport, and a bit extra for tipping or snacks. ATMs are rare, so carry cash from Bank of Wallis if you can.
