Just landed - wondering what gives the better rate in Samoa: ATM withdrawal or airport exchange counter?
Samoa’s airport counter isn’t the worst, but ANZ’s and Westpac’s ATMs gave me a stronger rate when I checked my statement back home. The airport desk is okay for a bit of cash to get you started, but pull most of your funds from a main bank ATM downtown to get the best deal.
For me, ATMs win in Samoa nearly every time. Airport counters had a pretty rough exchange margin and tacked on their fee. Every local I asked also pointed me to bank ATMs in Apia for better value. Bring a bit of extra foreign currency as backup in case the ATM’s down.
When I landed, the airport exchange counter rate was way higher than the posted rate at the ANZ ATM nearby. The Westpac ATM in town had the best rate for my Visa card - even with the withdrawal fee, I still came out ahead compared to the airport. Only use the desk for emergencies.
Just back from Samoa and I always got a better deal at Westpac and ANZ ATMs in Apia than exchanging at the airport. Airport counters were quick for a little cash, but their rates and quiet extra fees weren't great. Go for an ATM if you've got a decent travel card!
