Trying to plan ahead so any know if card payments are common at hostels in Norfolk Islands or cash is king?
For hostel stays on Norfolk Island, like at the Pacific Motel and Backpackers in Burnt Pine, cash is definitely the way to go. Card machines are mostly found at resorts and bigger hotels but not these hostels. I found ATMs limited to the main village area, so always plan to carry enough cash for meals, transport, and hotel to avoid any hassles.
I booked with the Pine Valley Hostel and had to pay in cash since they didn’t accept cards. Other budget lodgings, like the Captain’s Lodge, also handle payments this way. Norfolk Island’s card infrastructure feels limited in smaller places, so it’s smart to withdraw cash at the Commonwealth Bank ATM in Kingston before heading out. Having Aussie dollars made everything smoother.
Cards weren’t really accepted at the affordable Norfolk Island Travellers Lodge, especially if you want to pay for tours or smaller purchases. I had to use cash there, mostly AUD. Even the hostels around Burnt Pine, like the Kentucky Country Guesthouse, favored cash payments. There are a few ATMs in Kingston, but it’s best to come prepared with enough cash for your stay.
When I stayed at the Norfolk Island Holiday Lodge near Kingston, they preferred cash payments for hostel bookings and on-site expenses. Card acceptance was limited to only a few places, mostly around the village area. The Commonwealth Bank ATM in town handles Visa and Mastercard, but I wouldn’t rely on having your card accepted at all hostels. I recommend carrying enough Australian dollars cash for lodging, food, and transport.
