Trying to plan ahead so any know if card payments are common at hostels in Nauru or cash is king?
Cash rules on Nauru, especially at budget stays near the Anibare area. I couldn’t use my card at my hostel and had to pay cash. The island’s few ATMs serve Visa and Mastercard, but make sure you stock up early as there aren’t many places to withdraw from.
On Nauru, hostels are pretty old school-cash only. I booked a place near the island’s government area and they insisted on AUD cash upfront. Cards aren’t common for hotel or local spends. Make sure to withdraw from Bank of Nauru ATMs in advance to avoid running short.
I had to use cash for most hotels on Nauru. Hostels and small guesthouses, like those around Aiwo, don’t often accept cards. The Bank of Nauru has an ATM but it usually caters to Visa or Mastercard users-not many options for cards. Bring enough AUD cash or plan your withdrawals carefully.
Hostels in Nauru are few and mostly take cash only. When I stayed near the Yaren District at the Menen Hotel, they preferred cash payments, mostly in Australian dollars. Credit or debit card use is very limited, so carrying cash is a must. ATMs are scarce, with the Bank of Nauru offering limited services.
