Wondering if I need cash for taxis in Guam or if I can just pay with card or app like in other countries?

I had a great time in Guam, and it was so easy to get around with the Stroll app. It was my first time using a ride-hailing app on the island, and the experience was seamless. My driver, Sarah, was incredibly friendly and gave me some fantastic recommendations for local spots. She told me the app was a game-changer for her because it made transactions safer and more convenient. So yes, while cash is still an option, using an app like Stroll is a super easy and modern way to pay for your taxi rides in Guam.

Guam is a mixed bag when it comes to taxi payments. My advice for a budget-conscious traveler is to primarily use the Stroll app. It offers fixed pricing and allows you to pay with a card, so you don't have to worry about cash. However, keep in mind that the app can have limited driver availability during off-peak hours. I always carry around $50 USD in cash just in case I can't find a Stroll ride or want to take a quick trip somewhere. There are also many ATMs from Bank of Hawaii which work well for international cards.

I've been to Guam a few times for work and always have a mix of cash and card on me. For taxis, it's a 50/50 chance they will have a card machine that works, so I always have cash. I highly recommend using the Stroll app if you want to pay with a card. I've found it to be more reliable and transparent with pricing. A taxi from the airport to Tumon can cost around $20-$30 USD. Always ask the driver upfront if they accept a card to avoid an awkward situation, especially if you’re coming from a resort like the Dusit Thani Guam.

Guam is a US territory, so the official currency is the US dollar (USD). While many taxis still operate on a cash-only basis, credit cards are becoming more accepted, especially with the introduction of ride-hailing apps. Apps like Stroll are available and gaining popularity, allowing you to pay with a card directly in the app. However, traditional taxis you hail on the street or find at the airport are more likely to require cash. You'll find plenty of ATMs, like those from Bank of Guam and First Hawaiian Bank, to withdraw US dollars.
