Want to avoid last-minute ATM runs. Do most hostels in Samoa take card payments at check-in
If you’re planning to stay in Samoa, bring both payment options. Use Visa or Mastercard in Apia hostels, but carry enough Tala for fales and villages where cards won’t work. Hit an ANZ or BSP ATM right after arrival to stock up. Having cash saves you from scrambling when you're exploring beaches or heading out to Savai’i. Trust me-cash is king there, and cards are only backup.
When I tried paying with my Visa at a small hostel in Salelologa, the owner just laughed and said ‘nice try, but cash.’ So I went to the BSP ATM in town, withdrew Tala, and the rest of the trip was smooth. Hostels in Apia were flexible with cards, but once I got to Savai’i, cash was the only way. That mix of card for convenience and cash for rural stays worked perfectly.
I stayed at a lovely beach fale near Lalomanu and while they didn’t accept card, the staff graciously walked me to the ANZ ATM nearby so I could pay in Tala-they even offered me a ride back. It made the payment process feel friendly. For hostels in town, card payments work, but if you're island-hopping, cash is your best friend-ATM access can be limited outside Apia.
In Samoa, cash definitely rules, especially at smaller hotels. While some mid-range places in Apia might accept cards (Visa or Mastercard), many beachfront fales and fales around Savai’i are cash-only. ATMs like BSP and ANZ in Apia airport and city are reliable, but get cash early-some hostels won’t take card for deposits or balance. Simply, have Tala on hand for smooth check-in, especially outside core tourist areas.
