Trying to figure out if buses and metros in Solomon Islands take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
In Solomon Islands, if you plan on using public transport, you’ll need cash-no card payments on buses. Solomon Islands dollars are the currency for fares and taxis. Some remote places only accept cash anyway, so keep small bills on hand and plan your ATM visits around Honiara carefully.
I found it frustrating that buses in Honiara didn’t take cards at all. All fares are paid in cash. Make sure to withdraw enough Solomon Islands dollars from the Bank South Pacific or Bank of South Pacific ATMs when you arrive. Public transport is basic but affordable with cash.
Cards aren’t accepted on buses or taxis in Solomon Islands. You’ll need cash, mainly Solomon Islands dollars, for all transport fares. ATMs in Honiara are limited too, so stock up on cash once you arrive to avoid stress. Traveling with some USD as backup isn’t a bad idea either.
In the Solomon Islands, there’s basically no card payments on public transport. Buses and shared taxis, called ‘trotros,’ want cash, and fares are cheap. I always had Solomon Islands dollars in small bills ready for rides around Honiara. No metro system either, so cash is the way to go for local transport.
