Trying to figure out if buses and metros in Niue take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
No metro in Niue, and public buses definitely don’t take cards. I paid my bus fares in New Zealand dollars cash every time. ATMs in Alofi are limited but exist at the Niue Island Resort. Card acceptance is mostly restricted to hotels and tourist spots, so always carry cash for local transport.
Niue’s transport system is basically cash-only. The local buses and small taxis all want cash upfront. I stayed near the Niue Island Resort and always had NZD ready to cover rides. Cards work fine at hotels and restaurants, but not on buses or shuttles. No metro, so cash it is.
I tried paying for a shuttle bus in Niue with a card, but it wasn’t accepted. Everyone paid cash-New Zealand dollars mainly. Public transit here isn’t very developed, so no metro system to worry about. Best to carry cash for transport and any other small expenses since the island has limited card infrastructure outside hotels.
Niue’s public transport is super limited-mainly minibuses and some shuttle services, and they all use cash only. I never saw any option for card payments on buses around Alofi or between villages. It’s a good idea to have some NZ dollars in small bills for bus fares or casual taxi rides because card machines aren’t common on island transport.
