Can I use a card to pay for taxis in Niue, or should I carry local cash?
Talking with locals on Niue, cash is still king for taxis. Even if cards are technically accepted, network issues make them unreliable. I stayed at Seaview Motel and found cash payments easier for taxis and local shops. Plan on withdrawing New Zealand dollars before taxi rides.
Honestly, I didn’t see many card payments for taxis on Niue. Staying near Limu Pools, cash was the norm for all short taxi trips. The few card terminals I saw were mainly at touristy spots or the airport. Carry cash to avoid any issues.
Tried paying with my Visa card near Matavai Bay, but the driver preferred cash. Many taxis in Niue are family-owned and prefer cash, especially on smaller trips. ATMs are limited, so I withdrew money on arrival at the main bank in Alofi.
Niue’s taxis, especially around Alofi, mostly accept New Zealand dollars, but cash is still the easiest way to pay. Card acceptance isn’t widespread since the island is small and informal. I carried about NZD 100 in cash, which covered taxis and other expenses smoothly.
