On a budget and looking for free ATMs in Moorea - Any top banks?
When I visited Moorea, I mostly used Banque de Tahiti ATMs in Maharepa. My Wise Visa worked with a limit of XPF 40,000 and a fee of 400. Socredo also worked with my Revolut Mastercard. I withdrew enough to cover taxis, local restaurants, and excursions, while most hotel costs went on card. ATMs were safe to use, though not very common, so planning ahead was key. Overall, Moorea was card-friendly in resorts but definitely cash-based when it came to local life.
ATMs in Moorea are limited. My HSBC debit was rejected twice at Banque de Polynésie in Maharepa. When it worked at Socredo, the withdrawal limit was 30,000 XPF with a fee of XPF 500. Machines can also run out of cash on weekends. My advice: withdraw in Tahiti (Papeete) before taking the ferry, where Banque de Tahiti and Socredo have more reliable ATMs with higher limits. Carry some XPF cash at all times, as smaller vendors don’t accept cards.
I had a smooth experience withdrawing in Moorea. My Monzo Mastercard worked at Socredo ATMs near the ferry port, and I withdrew XPF 40,000 in one go, paying XPF 400. Banque de Tahiti also worked with my Revolut Visa without any issues. I only withdrew once since most resorts accepted cards, but cash was essential for food trucks, pearl shops, and lagoon tours. Compared to other Pacific islands, Moorea’s ATM system was reliable and easy to use.
In Moorea, ATMs are mainly run by Banque de Tahiti, Banque Socredo, and Banque de Polynésie. I used my Wise Visa at Banque de Tahiti in Maharepa, withdrawing XPF 40,000 (~$360 USD) with a fee of XPF 400. Socredo ATMs had the same limit but sometimes rejected my Revolut Mastercard. Machines are few, mostly near ferry terminals and Maharepa, so it’s smart to withdraw before heading into smaller villages.
