On my PNG trip, I relied almost entirely on BSP ATMs in Port Moresby and Goroka. My Wise card worked fine with limits of 2,000 PGK and fees of 2.5 PGK. ANZ ATMs at the airport were a good backup with limits of 800 PGK. I budgeted about 200-300 PGK per day for food, hotels, and taxis, so I usually withdrew once every 3-4 days. Cash was absolutely essential everywhere, as very few places accepted cards. Overall, BSP was the most reliable for foreign cards.

Papua New Guinea can be tough for ATMs. My Chase debit card was rejected multiple times at Kina Bank ATMs in Lae, and even when it worked, the limit was 1000 PGK but 10 PGK withdrawal fee. BSP and ANZ were the only ones that worked consistently. The fees at BSP were around 2.5 PGK, which adds up quickly if you withdraw often. My advice: take out the maximum allowed, keep extra cash in safe storage, and avoid withdrawing at night since some ATM areas felt unsafe.

I was actually surprised that BSP ATMs in Port Moresby worked fine with my Revolut Mastercard. I withdrew 1,000 PGK in one go, with a fee of 25 PGK, which isn’t bad considering the alternatives. ANZ Bank machines at the airport also accepted my Monzo card with a limit of 800 PGK. I rarely had problems in the city, though cash is absolutely essential for markets, buses, and tours. Compared to other Pacific islands, PNG’s ATM network felt fairly dependable if you stick to BSP and ANZ.

In Papua New Guinea, BSP (Bank South Pacific) and ANZ Bank are the most reliable ATM networks for foreign cards. I used my HSBC debit card at BSP in Port Moresby, and the withdrawal limit was 1,000 PGK (~$260 USD). The fee was around 2.5 PGK. ANZ Bank also worked with my Wise Visa, though the limit was slightly lower at 800 PGK. ATMs are concentrated in cities; outside major towns, machines can be scarce and unreliable. Always withdraw enough cash in advance before traveling to rural areas.
