The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Nauru, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back

That's a real bummer. I've heard about this happening in remote locations. Given that Nauru has a limited number of ATMs, your card is likely a goner. Banks on the island have strict rules about handling cards from other countries. For security, they will not return it. The smartest move is to contact your home bank right away, get the card cancelled, and then arrange for a new one to be sent to a trusted address.

Ugh, that is the worst feeling! In a place like Nauru, you need to assume that card is gone. The two banks there, the Bank of Nauru and Bendigo Bank, won't be able to help you. Your best and fastest option is to freeze the card through your banking app immediately, then call your bank's international support number to get a new card sent. Don't waste too much time trying to retrieve it; it's a lost cause.

What a terrible thing to happen. In Nauru, there are very few ATMs, so losing a card is a big deal. The local banks will not return your foreign debit card. For security reasons, a card that is swallowed by their machine will be destroyed. So, don't waste time trying to retrieve it. You need to call your bank immediately to cancel the card and have a replacement sent. You can also ask them if they can assist with an emergency cash transfer.

Oh man, that's a total pain, especially somewhere with only a few ATMs. I'm sorry to say it, but you're not getting that card back. The Bank of Nauru and Bendigo Bank are the two main banks, and they have policies where they destroy retained foreign cards to prevent fraud. Your priority must be to call your home bank immediately. Don't even bother waiting around the ATM. Use your mobile banking app or a calling card to freeze and then cancel the card. You'll need to figure out an alternative for cash, possibly a money wire.
